Rehabilitation

Do I need Rehabilitation after surgery?

You need to move your joint after surgery, so it is a good idea to participate in a rehabilitation program. After your hospitalisation, you have a few options:

  1. Out-patient rehabilitation program - this is offered to patients who have their surgery at the Mater Hospital. You will stay at home each night and a bus will collect you and take you to the Mater Hospital for a daily rehabilitation program

  2. Rehabilitation hospital - this involves staying at a rehabilitation hospital for a couple of weeks prior to going home. It may suit elderly patients and those who do not feel confident about going home immediately following their hospital stay. The nursing and discharge staff will assist you with this

  3. Manage your own rehabilitation at home. In this case, you will want to have help around you and you should engage a physiotherapist to assist you with your rehabilitation

The nursing staff will give you advice on appropriate rehabilitation for you.
