Rheumatoid arthritis tends to result in loss of articular cartilage with out the underlying bone changes seen in osteoarthritis. There is a generalised osteoporosis of the surrounding bone instead of the sclerosis seen in osteoarthrosis. Often symmetrical involvement of right and left hips.
